Water Investigation

The Green Room (3s)’s interest in water during 2021-2022 emerged from a few sources. First, our sensory table, usually filled with a wet material, was a hub of activity throughout the year. Second, we had a shrimp tank in our classroom. When we voted on shrimp as our new class pet, we became a community who needed to take care of an underwater creature. And third, when we read We Are Water Protectors, children became motivated around the importance of clean water. From there, we discussed some major questions such as: What is water? Who uses water? How do they use water? Over the course of a few weeks, we collected our wastewater (from the sensory table and from art projects) in a jug. Once the jug was full, children wondered what we should do with all this water. Children wanted to reuse the water, but thought it was too dirty. They decided to construct a machine to clean the water. Through much trial and error, we constructed a water-cleaning machine using funnels, tubes, sponges, and nets. We used our newly cleaned water to water seeds.
