Since the start of the year we have observed a special interest in book reading amongst the Green Room children. There are several times a day that we read together as a group and the children really enjoy this experience. During these times they eagerly share their thoughts and observations with the group. This often results in interesting and fun conversations. Even with these many opportunities the children seemed to want even more time with books. Because we value this interest, we looked at our schedule to find a routine time in which they can independently read a book, either alone or with a friend.
Having more time with books allows them the opportunity to look more deeply at the illustrations and reflect on what they remember about the story. Developing an ability to use illustrations to draw conclusions about the story is an important strategy in learning to read. We look forward to observing how they use this book reading time of the day.
