Greetings! Given the Blue Room children's continued interest in building, drawing, and talking about houses, we decided to find out more about their individual conceptions of what that word means. Finding out what children think about a topic that is frequently part of their play helps guide us toward what is at the root of their interest - be it something they already know about the topic, or something they are wondering but haven't figured out how to voice yet, but are able to imply through the details they tell us.

The other day, while working with wire in the Atelier, a child bent wire into a shape that made him think of a new kind of machine, called a dinosaur collecting machine. The child's sketch was inspiring to us as teachers – we wondered if our explorations of simple machines and our visits to the sanitation department had influenced his thinking about the use of machinery.

Science and Garden Log: October 16, 2015

The glorious fall continues! I find myself almost yearning for more of that cool crisp chill in the air.  Our walks outside are invigorating.  Not only do we locomote from school to garden, we talk about what we ate for breakfast (some kids ate waffles AND cereal AND oatmeal yesterday!), the things we see as we pass by ("There's a halloween owl in that window!"; "They're doing construction"), and the future (an anticipated evening dinner, family plans, halloween dreams).
